How Weather Affects Ready-Mix Concrete

Concrete is highly sensitive to environmental conditions. Temperature, humidity, and wind speed play a significant role in how concrete cures and how strong it ultimately becomes.

Hot Weather Challenges

  • Rapid Evaporation: High temperatures and dry winds cause the water on the surface of the concrete to evaporate faster than the internal bleed water can rise to replace it. This results in plastic shrinkage cracking unsightly, web like surface cracks that appear shortly after finishing.
  • Flash Setting: Extreme heat accelerates cement hydration, causing the concrete to set far too quickly. This leaves the crew with insufficient time to properly place, level, and finish the surface.

Cold Weather Challenges

  • Delayed Curing: If the ambient temperature drops below 5°C, the chemical reaction of hydration slows down dramatically. The concrete will take a long time to gain strength, delaying the removal of formwork and extending project timelines.
  • Freezing Risk: If fresh concrete freezes before it reaches a minimal compressive strength of approximately 3.5 MPa (usually within the first 24 to 48 hours), the water expanding inside the matrix will permanently destroy the concrete’s internal bond structure, reducing its final strength by up to 50%.
